Dragon and clouds made by soga shohaku in 1763, set of eight panels, ink on paper. From japan, edo period, now housed at the museum of fine arts in boston [4617x4132]. Japanese dragon paintings were heavily inspired by the masters in song dynasty such as chen rong and muqi (aka mokkei in japanese). Shohaku’s dragon and clouds.
Shōhaku’s dragon swoops down through whirls of clouds and mist and lashes its scaly tail through roiling waves in a rhythmic symphony of rich shades of ink extending across the monumental composition. Nobuo Tsuji recently determined that the tail section would have lined one interior wall of a temple structure; the head would have ornamented the opposing wall. Four additional fusuma of a smaller size (now missing), with the rest of the body of the dragon, would have flanked a central altar. While it is certain that the paintings were once installed in a Buddhist temple, unfortunately the provenance of the paintings is not known. Shōhaku greatly admired the style of the 13th-century Chinese painter Chen Rong. Indeed the energy of the mercurial, mythical beast found on these fusuma has parallels to the images found in Chen Rong’s Nine Dragons scroll dated 1247 (and in the MFA’s collection). However, Shōhaku brought his own dynamism to the execution of this work in the forceful gestural brushstrokes that sweep across the vast surface of the painting. It is these qualities that Murakami has captured in his reinterpretation of the work. William Sturgis Bigelow Collection, 1911 11.7040–11.7043
